New Year, New Priorities

The anticipation rises as yet another year goes by. I need to learn to turn off the news! Although I will say, I have been able to establish a fairly good balance between my everyday life and my momma bear tendencies. There for a while I couldn’t pull myself away from anything “emergency preparedness”. Pinterest? Forget about it. Youtube? Hours… Lost… Swallowed up in a vortex of possibilities, probabilities and diy projects. It can play on a girl’s sanity, I assure you. I’ve learned balance this past year and I peek into the New Year with hope and confidence.

I have some suggestions for your journey through this New Year. This applies to everyone, from the Prepper Newbie to the Swiss Family Robinsons:

Set Goals
“A goal without a plan is just a wish” –Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Make it simple and attainable. Ask yourself these simple questions: What do I need? What do I want? How do I make that happen?
Get Organized
Keep multiple ongoing lists. Make lists of: Food Inventory; Get List; To Do List; Documentation; Family info; etc.
Spread the word
Talk openly to your family and friends about your concerns and what you are doing to prepare for them. If they are on board, it will make things much easier for you in the long run. Statistics show that there are a bunch of “preppers” in the USA. I am not suggesting that you put out an add in the local newspaper with pictures of your stuff and your address…

Find a group. Truprep facilitates a meetup group a few times a month.

Practice
If you have a “get-home-bag”… use it! Camp with it… Hike with it… You will learn a lot more from using your stuff that you will by watching some guy on youtube. You might learn the true value of toilet paper. Practice cooking, canning…
Find a new hobby
My new hobby this year is going to be Canning! I’ve always wanted to do it! It is something that I do not have to be in an emergency situation to benefit from.
Make your health a priority
Have you ever hiked all day on uneven terrain? Chopped wood for hours because your family was hungry and freezing. Toted water long distance… or heck… a short distance for that matter. 8 ½ pounds per gallon is heavy! Run away from someone who was trying to rob you… or after them if they succeeded?
Find a good balance
Don’t get overwhelmed! Appreciate the good in everyday. Put aside some time for emergency preparedness, but do not live as if a disaster has already happened.

Need help getting started? Truprep has some great classes to kick off the new year! The classes vary from the Intro to Preparedness to Canning classes and they are always being updated,. Check out the website for a class topic, time and place http://truprep.com/store/classes.html. There are classes for everyone, from the newbie to the swiss family…. you get the idea 🙂
