Canned meat… sounds yummy… I’m being a bit sarcastic of course. Keystone canned meat is new to Truprep, so I thought I’d try it out. There’s (cooked) canned Pork, Chicken, Turkey, Shredded Beef & Ground Beef. The only ingredient in these cans is the meat and sea salt, that’s it. They all come in a 1 lb (28oz) can and run about $8.49/lb (if you want to compare your typical grocery store price). It’s very reasonable. But how does it taste? I won’t lie… it’s okay. It’s canned for goodness sake.

Let’s stop right there for a minute. There is something you must know about me before we continue. I am a foodie. A bit of a food snob if you will. I like my sashimi grade tuna seared and rare, not from a can. Give me a good aged cheese and a bottle of dry cabernet and I will be your friend for life…  you get the picture. Moving on.

I will say this about Keystone, it’s the best you are going to find if you want to put up canned meat. (Your other alternative is freeze dried meat which has a substantially longer shelf life… or I guess you could get a cow and a couple of chickens. Check your neighborhood covenants first).

The best thing about Keystone canned meats is it’s ability to be stored without refrigeration for a period of at least two years (some say they will keep for up to 10 years). Keystone canned meats are very versatile. I suggest that you find some recipes that use other canned foods, include foods that won’t spoil. Because if you are in an emergency situation and all of the food in your fridge is spoiled… you know the story.

Here’s a good one (one of my favorites):

Taco Soup

  • 1 can of Keystone ground beef
  • 3 cans of beans (red, white and black)
  • 1 can of corn
  • 1 can or salsa or diced tomatoes with chilies
  • Fill one of the cans with water and add to the soup
  • 1 pouch of taco seasoning
  • 1 pouch of dry ranch seasoning

Add all ingredients to a pot and bring to a low boil, let all of the flavors blend together and voila՛!

Keystone has a few recipes on their website, which i have included below. They also have recipes on the can (which I am not including because you will have it in hand after purchasing the product). These recipes are good if you have the other ingredients on hand, such as sour cream or pie shells. In other words, use your cans periodically (rotating them in and out to keep them fresh). Its a great alternative to running back out to the grocery store once again.
