This free workshop is tailored for first-time handgun owners, focusing on essential skills for safe and effective firearm upkeep. Participants can bring their own handgun or use one provided. We’ll cover practical, hands-on instruction in a supportive environment.

  • Introduction and Safety Basics: Overview of workshop goals, participant experience levels, and fundamental firearm safety rules (e.g., treating every gun as loaded, proper handling, and legal considerations).
  • Safely Clearing the Handgun: Step-by-step guidance on removing magazines, checking chambers, and ensuring the firearm is unloaded, with tips for semi-automatics vs. revolvers.
  • Disassembly: Field stripping your handgun into key components, including model-specific variations and required tools.
  • Cleaning: Detailed process for removing buildup and debris using brushes, solvents, and patches, emphasizing best practices to avoid damage.
  • Lubrication: Selecting and applying the right lubricants to friction points for smooth operation, without excess buildup.
  • Inspection for Wear and Tear: Visual checks for common issues like cracks, rust, or part fatigue, and when to consult a professional.

Course Instructor

Rob Sheppard is the firearms manager and resident armorer/gunsmith at TruPrep.  Among his Armorer certifications are Colt M16/AR15, Semper Paratus Arms AR, Sons Of Liberty Gun Works AR, SIG Sauer, Heckler & Koch, Remington, Smith & Wesson, and Beretta.  He works on a wide array of firearms and systems not covered on that list.   Shep is also the owner and chief instructor of Precision Applications, LLC, a full-line firearms and tactics training company.   A former United States Marine and SWAT Sniper for the Marietta Police Department, Shep also served as a Federal Air Marshal.  While serving in these capacities, he was an Instructor for Firearms and Tactics.  Shep is currently a reserve Police Captain.   With instructor certifications in a wide range of firearms, Use of Force, Team/Individual Tactics, and Less Lethal, Shep brings unparalleled expertise to TruPrep and is highly respected in his field.
